Hunting has almost become part of every day, so it's hard to write about everything. But hounds are more than happy with this. The first hunting day after Christmas Peace (27.12) had 4 pursuits, all with hare. The result was 2 missed shots and one wounding, but Chill surprised us all and catched this hare herself. The best numbers of the season if we count the hares and the missed shots ;). Only poor Lissu has to stay at home for couple of weeks now due to her season, so unfair. On Monday Grandpa and Chill came home with a hare. And at the moment the forest is filled with Murra's and Chill's "hare-singing".

Well, we cannot deny that a more succesful day can be hard to find. In total 28 estonian hounds were entered, 19 of them were present - among them dogs from Russia and Finland as well. The biggest competition in our show history and the biggest victory. On the photo judge Jelena Kruus from Estonia and us.

To prove that her hunting skills are still there, Chill and grandpa came home with hare stew material.
To make it short - we drove 1000 km and 2 x 2,5 hours by boat to give our hounds personal walks in the winter wonderland. But there's nothing you can do - wild animal trials need a bit of luck also. Couple of days earlier 20-30 cm of snow had came, and in Murra's and Chill's trial territory we even couldn't see fresh pawprints. Lissu's territory had some, but despite of her excellent search (with maximum points), she did not get a hare running.
Well, this trip did show us, that our hounds are interested in us too. When in known forest, they take off and we do not see or hear them until they have found prey. This time all of them came to check on us regularly (every 15-20 minutes), and went back to search.
However we did see some rabbits/hares. Ca 80 km from Helsinki we let the dogs out for a walk. They immediately picked up a scent on the neighbouring field, and few moments later a grey hare took off from the bushes. Unfortunate for the dogs, they were forced to stay with us. Lissu spent some time watching out from the car window, hoping to see another one. While driving back, we noticed a car crash victim, a white hare, by the road. And on Sunday morning, while taking the dogs for walk, we got a waking call - one of Espoo's cityrabbits took of right under our noses. Luckily we managed to hang on to the leashes, the rabbit run over a busy street.
Age is like fine wine....
It gets better with time.
If things get better with time,
Then you are approaching Magnificent.
Saturday started with a large fox, found by Chill. No breaks in pursuit, but as the fox kept moving away from us, we took the dogs off. For next Chill found a grey hare, young one, as its movements were very easy, jumps 2-2,5 meters, hounds did their job well. Chill's voice is much resonant than Lissu's at the moment, and Murra just didn't get too exited... So we changed places again. This time the prey was small fox, work was fast and final, as you can see on the photo ;). And the day ended with another fox - found by Murra this time. Unfortunately hunters did not have the persistance of the hounds and the fox went home to give his nerves some rest.

This weekend's catch - a raccoon dog and a fox. Fox pursuit lasted for 3 hours - all three of them were very persistent - the fox running in front and Lissu-Murra chasing it. We can determine the prey based on their voice now - if they're chasing a hare, the whole forest is filled with sonorous tongue giving, fox pursuit is conducted with a bit less sounding voice and the raccoons only "deserve" some barking.
At first it seemed, that Lissu and Murra have forgotten all their skills and knowledge during the summer and just came for a walk, but it was just the lack of tracks. Soon the forest was filled with lovely voices - Lissu' s sonorous and resounding voice and Murra' s baritone. Based on the GPS screen it was an old smart hare, which enjoyed fooling them around. Hooks, knots, jumps - all like in the textbook. From the second circle the hare jumped off and went over a roadway. Luckily we managed to pick the dogs up, as they were checking the tracks on the side of the road. In total a 1,5 hour pursuit! Good work, as it was very stormy: strong wind and rain. And the satisfied look on the faces afterwards...
